Latest News - Co-educational Developments

Riddlesworth Hall has begun the process of becoming fully co-educational.

Riddlesworth will continue to offer girls all that it does at the moment, improving their programme as appropriate but, as from the Spring Term 2008, it will also offer continuity of education for boys.

  • Day places for boys up to Year 6 inclusive.  This is no great change since we have, in the past, offered day places for boys up to the age of 11.  However, these boys will be able to stay at Riddlesworth until the end of the Prep School (13+) and will not have to leave at 11, as was the case previously.

  • Boarding places for boys up to Year 5 inclusive.  This is a major change.  These boys will be accommodated in Headmaster's House in dormitories adjacent to and above the Headmaster's Flat.  Girls' accommodation will remain as it is.

From Autumn Term 2008, Riddlesworth will offer day places for boys up to Year 7 inclusive and boarding places up to Year 6.  In Autumn Term 2009, day boys will be admitted into Year 8 and boarding into Year 7.  Finally, in Autumn Term 2010, the School will be fully co-educational, with boarding and day places offered to 13+ for both girls and boys.

The programme for boys at Riddlesworth will aim to be as good as any on offer at other prep schools.  Although, obviously, it will take a little time for the number of boys to grow, we would expect to offer boys, as soon as they reach the approprite year group:

  • Sport - rugby, hockey, cricket, cross-country, orienteering, tennis, judo.  Fixtures, mostly 7 or 9-a-side, against other schools in all major sports at U9, U11 and, in due course, U13 level.  Mr Cochrane will take the lead in this, supported by other appropriately experienced staff and coaches (from both in and outside the school).  Mrs Putt will continue to concentrate on girls' sports.
  • Adventurous Pursuits - Derbyshire Dales, Snowdon, Ben Nevis, skiing, sailing, climbing wall.  Most of this is already on offer.
  • Music and Drama - currently offered and enhanced.
  • Clubs and Societies - including model-making, chess, table tennis and ropes course.

We expect Riddlesworth to retain its character and all that is good within it.  The atmosphere will change but the ethos will remain.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact the Headmaster, Mr Paul Cochrane, or the School Secretary, Mrs Debbie Last.
